I am writing to seek accommodation in the Snowy Mountains for agroup of students from Perth.

We expect to be the Snowy Mountains between June 1 and June 12. There are fourteen people in our group, five men and seven women, and a married couple. The five men will accept dormitory accommodation,and the women are happy to share rooms, but the married couple would like a double room. We hope to keep our expenses as low as possible.

Please tellme about recreational services in the area. The group will bring their own boots for bushwalking, but we are hoping to hire equipment for other sports, likes kiing. Some of our group will want to hire geological picks and other equipment, if possible. We also need to know about access to caves and other interesting geological features in the area.

I am looking forward toreceiving information about the Student Hostel Services and other facilities.

Nowadays, it is common that ex-offenders violate the law repeatedly although they have been punished. In this essay, I will initially discuss the reasons for this situation, followed by my suggestions which can assist in preventing crimes from happening.

There are primarily two factors largely responsible for recidivism. To commence with, the sanctions against criminals are not harsh enough. In other words, being punished does not make a huge difference to offenders, leading to the possibility that these people are normally unable to realise the detrimental consequences that breaching the law will entail for victims and society, and such behaviour is likely to be re-exhibited as a result. Additionally, former convicts are not completely accepted in society. People released from prison seem to be automatically judged as those whose character is poor. Their family and friends may not embrace them and employers refuse to recruit them. Therefore, nothing can help them to survive but to re-offend.

To cease crimes, several approaches can be adopted. Firstly, the implementation of more punitive measures is effective. Only when people are truly conscious of their wrongdoing both physically and psychologically can they stop themselves from committing crimes. For instance, a longer stint of community service or jail sentence is respectively appropriate for convicts with minor crimes and serious ones. Secondly, providing more vocational training sessions and job opportunities for those with criminal records is another feasible solution. If they can earn a living independently, having sufficient money to afford accommodation and feed themselves, they are rarely motivated to participate in some illegal activities again.

In conclusion, lenient punishments for law breakers and less social tolerance for previous criminals are the two major two causes of re-offending. However, if severer penalties can be meted out to prisoners and meanwhile ex-criminals are allowed to have a smoother re-entry into the community, crime issues can be tackled.

The discussion about how watching television programmes could impact on children has heated up recently. Some people are against this activity, whereas others are for it. As far as I am concerned, the advantages of watching TV undoubtedly outweigh its disadvantages.

There are two reasons why some people claim it is detrimental for children to watch television every day. First, it is widely acknowledged that too much screentime does harm to children’s eyesight. Scientific studies suggest that children should not be glued to television. Additionally, children’s psychological health might be impaired due to exposure to unsuitable contents. For example, violence and drug abuse are often shown in some films. Children who lack discipline or close supervision easily become addicted to the virtual world and might adopt an impractical outlook upon life, which has an adverse influence on their well-being.

However, watching television in face can be informative and educational for children. To begin with, watching news is an efficient way to know what is happening around the world. Saying no to television is a veto on getting informed. Also, TV shows like National Geographic and Animal World satisfy their curiosity and develop their creativity. Therefore, what matters most is being selective about what to watch and how. Last but not least, it can be quality time for both parents and children instead of a waste of time.

In conclusion, although there might be some health risks for younger generation to watch television for too long and too often, I still believe that it is a blessing rather than a curse; cartoons, films and a large number of programmes do enrich their life in many ways.

One of the most important social developments that helped to make possible a shift in thinking about the role of public education was the effect of the baby boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s on the schools. In the 1920’s, but especially in the Depression conditions of the 1930’s, the United States experienced a declining birth rate --- every thousand women aged fifteen to forty-four gave birth to about 118 live children in 1920, 89.2 in 1930, 75.8 in 1936, and 80 in 1940. With the growing prosperity brought on by the Second World War and the economic boom that followed it young people married and established households earlier and began to raise larger families than had their predecessors during the Depression. Birth rates rose to 102 per thousand in 1946,106.2 in 1950, and 118 in 1955.

Although economics was probably the most important determinant, it is not the only explanation for the baby boom. The increased value placed on the idea of the family also helps to explain this rise in birth rates. The baby boomers began streaming into the first grade by the mid 1940’s and became a flood by 1950. The public school system suddenly found itself overtaxed. While the number of schoolchildren rose because of wartime and postwar conditions, these same conditions made the schools even less prepared to cope with thefood. The wartime economy meant that few new schools were built between 1940 and 1945. Moreover, during the war and in the boom times that followed, large numbers of teachers left their profession for better- paying jobs elsewhere in the economy.

Therefore in the 1950’s and 1960’s, the baby boom hit an antiquated and inadequate school system. Consequently, the “ custodial rhetoric” of the 1930’s and early 1940’s no longer made sense that is, keeping youths aged sixteen and older out of the labor market by keeping them in school could no longer be a high priority for an institution unable to find space and staff to teach younger children aged five to sixteen. With the baby boom, the focus of educators and of laymen interested in education inevitably turned toward the lower grades and back to basic academic skills and discipline. The system no longer had much interest in offering nontraditional, new, and extra services to older youths.

During the three score years, the USA generally outweighed Sweden in terms of the proportion of those aged 65 and over. But the gaps between have never been remarkable. In stark contrast, Sweden strikingly eclipsed Japan in this aspect evidenced by the fact that in 1940 the proportion for the USA was about 9%, clearly higher than 5% for Japan.

Whereas Japan experienced declines from 5% to 3% , both Sweden and the USA climbed. Put it in detail, by the year 1983, the figures have peaked at 15% and 13% in the USA and Sweden respectively. Noticeably, in 1997 the proportion in the USA was equal to that in Sweden.

According to the forecast, from now on, all of the three countries will skyrocket although exceptions might happen. However, by 2040 the proportion will have peaked at 27%, 25%, and 23% in Japan, Sweden, and the USA respectively.

In sum, the three countries are different in the field under study.
